School Bus Adaptation

Everyone’s favorite day of school is field trip day. As an iconic symbol of learning and field trips, the yellow school bus is transformed into a mobile classroom, making every day, field trip day. This modern approach to teaching offers flexibility, that is desperately needed during a global pandemic, and can provide constant open air classroom options where transmission rates are reduced daily or be deployed quickly in the future as the world attempts to return to normal and new virus outbreaks occur.

By combining both a transportation system and classroom into one mobile school kit, a class of twenty students and their teacher, a capacity of half to a third of a typical school bus, can be transported safely with masks on and windows open to that day’s selected site. If students elect to walk, ride their bikes, or be dropped off by parents, greater social distancing can be observed by the remaining bus riders.

Once on-site for the day, retractable awnings are extended from the roof to provide shelter from sun, rain, or snow and flat packed furniture and teaching materials are removed from the storage area under the bus. If the site is intended to be used for longer, or harsher weather is expected, more durable structures can be setup and secured into the ground using threaded pile anchors that offer greater stability, while still leaving no trace when removed.
